B is for… Baobabs

I adore these upside-down trees – there is something about their majestic, statuesque silhouette that appeals to me.  Plus, I remember them from my first reading of Saint Exupery’s Le Petit Prince: the tress were the bane of the little prince’s life, but still I remember them fondly.

Baobab trees, Okavango Delta, Botswana

There is a great South African tale about the tree’s strange upside-down-ness.  The story goes that the baobab tree was an accomplished complainer – it complained about everything and everyone.  The gods did all they could to please it until even they lost patience and turned it upside down, burying its head in the ground, so that it could never complain again!

So the next time you are tempted to moan about something, think of this grand but, now, silent tree…

Maybe that is what happened to the strange upside down man outside Victoria station in London
