A Brighton shop window

The cute knitted seagulls in this Brighton shop window look harmless enough, but the same can’t be said of their real-life cousins.

Smaller birds live, justifiably, in fear (look away now if you’re squeamish!):

If you live near the coast you need special rubbish bags:

Rubbish in Broadstairs

They supposedly spread disease, and they are certainly a nuisance when present in close proximity, whether they are dive-bombing to grab food, or just silently crapping on your head.  Us humans have come up with numerous methods of deterring the creatures – water sprays, owl eyes, sheepdogs (gulldogs?), birds of prey, spikes, electric shock, … –  but when it comes down to it, it is our way of life that attracts them.  Our rubbish and leftover food is their delight.

Despite all that though, I do like to hear the cry of seagulls in the near distance as it generally tells me I’m close to the sea and I do love to be beside the seaside.
